What are GS1-128 barcodes?
GS1-128 barcodes are code 128 barcodes that use the GS1 application standard. As part of the GS1-128, the Global Trade Identification Number (GTIN) is one of the application identifiers (AI) embedded inside the barcode.
The use of GS1-128 barcodes has become widely adopted by major retailers, causing many manufacturers and distributors to ensure they have the necessary technology to conduct business electronically with these companies and remain competitive.
Utilize GS1-128’s with E21 ERP
With E21 ERP’s labeling and barcoding system, manufacturers and distributors can map data fields in E21 to their associated application identifiers used in the GS1-128. Within the system setup, GTIN lengths can be specified at 12, 13, or 14 digits, and item UPCs can be unique by item and unit of measure. In addition, each vendor’s barcode format can be maintained within the E21 system, allowing warehouse users to scan supplier barcodes rather than having to generate and apply new barcode labels at the time of receiving.

The ability to create custom label formats gives manufacturers and distributors the flexibility they need to meet all their customer and industry-specific labeling requirements. Labels can also be designed for warehouse locations, pallets, shipping, and more. E21 ERP labeling is fully integrated with the system’s built-in EDI software , allowing GS1-128 container labels to be generated with the container ID passed through the ASN transaction.
If organizations elect not to use E21 ERP’s NiceLabel integration, canned label formats exist that can be modified using E21’s built-in, web-based report designer.
