What is a concurrent user vs. a named user?

A single concurrent ERP user represents one user actively signed in to the ERP system. The total number of concurrent users, then, represents the total number of users signed in to the system simultaneously. A concurrent user differs from a named user in that a named user need not be signed in to the system to count as a user.

Let’s compare concurrent and named users in an example company. Suppose a manufacturing company operates three shifts, with most office personnel using the system on the first shift.

In this example, the maximum number of ERP concurrent users is fifty. Since none of the shifts overlap and a different set of users are in each shift, we can count the number of users signed in during the largest shift to find the concurrent users. In contrast, the total number of named users is eighty-five. To find named users, we must count every user signing in.

However, many more factors are typically involved in finding an appropriate number of concurrent ERP users for an organization.
